Jon Stewart, Journalism and Comedy Central
When the loudest voice for responsibility in journalism is the guy who's show on Comedy Central comes on right after Crank Yankers, there's something seriously wrong. After reading the trascript I so wanted to see the real video footage that I installed BitTorrent for the very first time.

Super Target
They just opened a new Super-Target less than two miles from my house. This is vastly more convenient than the old Not-So-Super-Target that's twenty minutes away. Now a Super-Target is just like a normal Target, but with the addition of a grocery store. I always thought the "Super" combo stores like Super Wal-Mart and Super-Target were a bit odd. What are the chances I want to buy groceries and say, a DVD player?

Atom Hackathon at XML 2004
Tim Bray has announced that XML 2004 will feature an Atom Hackathon. Bring your laptops and Atom Publishing Protocol implementations! I'll be at the Hackathon as well as the conference. I am presenting The AtomAPI: Publishing Web Content with XML and HTTP. Need more reasons to go? It looks like Sam Ruby and Robert Sayre will also be there.

For some definition of REST
Bloglines has announced new web services that they offer. Unfortunately, they tried to attach themselves to the term REST without really understanding it. I am encouraged that the term, and the idea of alternatives to SOAP, are gaining traction, but not at the expense of corrupting the meaning.
So what is the problem? The getitems operation works via GET even though it will "mark unread items as read". This is clearly not an idempotent operation.

The Loyal WS-Opposition
Tim Bray is speaking out against the WS-Insanity. The idea, like in parliament, is to oppose, but be loyal by not leading a mob with pitchforks, and standing ready to provide an alternative. I like that idea, and might even put my pitchfork and torch away for a while to see how this goes.
I Still Don't Buy It No matter how hard I try, I still think the WS-* stack is bloated, opaque, and insanely complex.

Manipulate your world
Make, a new mook (hybrid magazine/book) from O'Reilly, and edited by Mark Frauenfelder.
Make brings the do-it-yourself mindset to all the technology in your life. Make is loaded with exciting projects that help you make the most of your technology at home and away from home. This is a magazine that celebrates your right to tweak, hack, and bend any technology to your own will.
Looks like a very cool publication.

SOAP specs have little specs
Edd Dumbill: SOAP specs have little specs upon their backs to spite 'em
And little specs have lesser specs, and so ad infinitum. "Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em, And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum. And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on, While these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on."

ClearCase as a leading indicator of small technology company failure
Is it just me or is ClearCase a leading indicator of small technology company death? I've never used the product, never even seen a demo, and yes, I know, they position themselves as software asset management for medium to large teams. The question comes from the fact that the only people I know that have used ClearCase have used it in the past, all at small technology companies, and they all, without exception, are companies that have gone out of business.

Bennie and the Jets
There is some music I just don't like. For example pop music from the 70's, or say, anything from Elton John. I would just prefer not to listen to it. Not that I claim it's painful to listen to, unlike show tunes. It's not even that show tunes are painful, but it just seems there's always at least one person around who was in theater in high school that insists on singing along.

Smallville
I don't know how so many seasons went by without me noticing Smallville. Maybe it was the rather obtuse name, or maybe it was the breathless ads that made it sound like just another teen-angst melodrama, but I never clued in that it was about Clark Kent (Superman) during his teen years. The shooting is dark, Clark doesn't have all of his powers yet, and weird stuff happens in the town.

draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-00
The first Internet-Drafts of both the Atom Format and the Atom Publishing Protocol (previously known as the AtomAPI) are now available.
The .txt versions of the files served from http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts are the normative versions and should be the ones you link to when referrring to either the Format or the Protocol. With that understanding, alternate versions of the Publishing Protocol are available in HTML, XML and a side-by-side diff in HTML showing changes from the previous version.

From trash to treasure
Tim Bray is shocked, just shocked to find that Safari is adding extensions to HTML.
What were you expecting to happen when your beloved W3C, highjacked by the intranet, threw HTML onto the scrap heap? I've been wondering about this conspicuous omission myself. The W3C didn't get rid of the Form tags (at least not yet) in (x|d)html but they seemed to have made it a point not to put one iota of improvement in forms processing.

Titles Matter for PyBlosxom
PyBlosxom has a flexible callback mechanism that allows pretty fine grained mamipulation of your entries as they are being rendered unto HTML or RSS or whatever you want your output to be. That's real useful since the templating engine, while fast, does not allow any calculated values. This is no Cheetah. Luckily defining callbacks to calculate specific values is simple.
One of the finer points of publishing on the web is that titles matter.
